II. Who Does This Policy Affect?
All Board of Trustees, HFC faculty, staff, students, vendors/contractors and visitors to our campus
**III. Purpose **
The purpose of this policy and the protocols established in compliance with this policy, is to provide a comprehensive standard of care for human subjects of research conducted by students, staff, faculty, or visiting researchers at Henry Ford College. Compliance with this policy and accompanying procedure will minimize undue risk to using human subjects in research projects. Those subjects participating in this type of research will be made aware of their rights in compliance with Title 45, part 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations. IRB approval must precede commencement of any work involving human subjects.
IV. Policy Statement
An HFC Institutional Review Board (IRB) is established to review both internal and external requests for research studies involving HFC human subjects (students, faculty, and/or staff). Anyone who requests to engage in research involving human subjects at HFC must receive authorization from the **Vice President of Institutional Research, Planning, and Accreditation **who shall invoke the protocol established by the College to assure that:
A. The welfare and rights of human subjects are adequately protected and informed written consent given, if necessary;
B. Human subjects are not placed at unreasonable physical, mental, or emotional risk as a result of the research;
C. The research outcomes are of significance to the interests and mission of the college;
D. The necessity and importance of the research outweighs the risks to the subjects; and
E. The researcher(s) is/are qualified to conduct research involving human subjects.
V. Definitions
A. Institutional Review Board: An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee established to review and approve research involving human subjects. The purpose of the IRB is to ensure that all human subject research is conducted in accordance with all federal, institutional, and ethical guidelines.
B. Human Subjects: A living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) is conducting research
C. Human Subjects Research: Any systematic investigation involving human subjects designed to develop or contribute to generalizable knowledge.
D. Human subjects research is:
• Often presented/published outside the college
Human subjects research is not:
• classroom surveys for internal use
• data-gathering for the exclusive purpose of improving service or practice at HFC
